There are times when we all crave a little luxury. Modern life is full of stress and sometimes it seems to be getting worse, as the explosion of instant communications makes it all more immediate. There are so many things you have to do: bills need paying, forms need filling, plumbers, electricians, builders, all have to be found, contacted and spoken to. It seems to be one thing after another.

At times like that my thoughts invariably turn to a luxury holiday in Rome.

If you were to ask: ‘Why Rome?’ then I would reply that I cannot think of any city that has more to offer. From the Spanish Steps to the Sistine Chapel, from the Capitoline Museum to the Trevi Fountain, from the Colosseum to the Catacombs, from the Pantheon to the Vatican City, there is more history and spectacle in the eternal city than in any comparable urban area, which is hardly surprising when you consider that Rome was the original ‘Urbs.’

You don’t have to be a history buff to love the city, though. There are fine shops, full of stylish Italian products to buy. There are good hotels and restaurants. The night life is what you would expect from a bustling city full of busy and stylish Italians. The food is good and the weather hot. Personally I can hardly wait to be sitting in a restaurant on one of the Piazzas, sipping either an espresso or, if it’s later, a glass of chilled Frascati and watching the whirl of life pass by.

Why am I planning a luxury holiday this year? Well, look at the first paragraph of this piece. What do all those stresses and strains amount to? The answer is that they demand action from you, pronto. On a luxury holiday, by contrast, all the work is done. You just have to sit back and enjoy the experience.

That is where a really first-rate holiday provider comes into its own. You simply tell them what you want and they do the rest. Want to fly club class? They can do that and have the tickets waiting. You would like to be picked up from the airport and whisked in comfort to your hotel, which is a five star hotel with a kids’ club and plenty of self-pampering equipment? Your holiday provider can hire the car and book the rooms.

Those many sights I mentioned earlier can be seen on a guided tour, and your holiday provider can book them in advance. If you want to use Rome as a base for further exploration then your provider finds whatever mode of transport you want to use, be it a car, a train, or even a ferry to Capri or Sicily. The stress-free nature is the real luxury of this type of holiday. I say: ‘Bring it on.’
